Classic Novel: Course Description
Works of art deemed classic are often debated and critiqued for generations; for literature to be held in such high regard it must captivate a special place in the hearts and minds of its readers. We will explore what a classic is and how such writings stand the test of time. We will examine social, political, historical, and cultural beliefs that shaped the stories they created, while making significant connections to contemporary issues. While reading, we will explore the individual and his/her conflict with society. The purpose of this course is to help students write effectively and confidently. Over the course of the year, students will become skilled readers of prose as well as skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Recognizing and appreciating literary elements in the selections they read, students will be able to produce increasingly more sophisticated pieces on their own.
